Complete Veterinary Care has linked up with Spectrum Laboratories to bring you a cost effective and comprehensive allergy service for your practice.
In-vitro testing has been available to veterinarians since 1985 with the introduction of the K-9 RAST (Radioallergosorbant Test) program. A number of year’s later ELISA (Enzyme Linked Immunosorbant Assay) technology became available. These are essentially similar tests, using radioisotopes and enzyme colour reactions respectively as their means of qualification.
In recent developments, the R&D Department at Spectrum Labs has analysed each system and combined the most reliable aspects of each to bring you the SPOT test, a reliable and advanced in-vitro test, now available through C.V.C.
We provide a one off test consisting of 92 UK specific allergens for the canine and feline panel and a 86 allergen panel for equine samples. We feel it is important to test for the full range of allergens in order to gain a more complete understanding of the animal’s immune system. Treating allergies requires a holistic approach and the more allergens tested for and subsequently treated, the greater the chance of success.
Once we have the results, normally available within 10 days of receiving the sample, we advise treating the animal by way of Hyposensitisation Treatment. The principal behind desensitisation is to stimulate the production of the specific IgG, blocking antibodies by injecting back into the animal its offending allergens in a controlled amount, controlled concentration following a strict schedule. As the concentration and amount of injections increase, so does the IgG produced until eventually the allergen symptoms are controlled. The animal is now below its threshold. This can take as little as one month but usually takes 4-6 months in most animals. We also provide a treatment diary to help the animals progress and advise the best diet to assist with the treatment.
