Complete Veterinary Care have teamed up with one of the leading Rabies testing laboratories in the UK to offer your practice a quick and easy service.
We use the approved Biobest laboratory for rabies serology for the movement of cats and dogs into European Union member states from outside the EU. Further details of bringing animals into the EU are available from the EU website. Please note that regulations for entry into the UK, Ireland, Sweden and Norway still only allow one entry without quarantine from certain countries.
Complete Veterinary Care (C.V.C.) provides your practice with the administration service for rabies testing. We will provide you with the submission forms, padded envelopes and test tubes.
From the day that you send in your blood /serum sample we will check that the sample is of a good quality and we will spin the blood sample down if necessary. We then send the sample to Biobest who test for the antibody titre. The titre result must be greater than or equal to 0.5 I.U./mL. A result that is lower will need a re-test.
CVC should receive the results within five working days. The results are then logged and a copy taken of the certificate. The original certificate is then emailed and posted back to your practice. This certificate should then be passed onto the owner for the P.E.T.S.
The certificate will remain valid up to the date that your pets booster vaccination is due.
Bloods should generally be taken 21-28 days post vaccination to ensure the highest titre but this may varydepending on the vaccine supplier. You need to check the recommended period for your specific Vaccine manufacturer.
Please send 1ml serum or 3ml whole blood. It is vital that the whole blood samples are sent by “next day / special delivery” on the day they were taken in order to prevent the blood haemolysing.
Biobest is the principal provider of rabies serology testing in Europe (for PETS, the Pet Travel Scheme). Biobest provide rabies blood testing services through several general clinical pathology laboratories, and also direct to the veterinary practice.
Biobest rabies serology testing service is the quickest and most cost effective available. The rabies blood test takes two days, and results will normally be available four days from sample receipt. Where requested we will do everything possible to achieve a 48 hour turnaround on urgent samples.
Our extensive experience of rabies testing means that unlike other laboratories we rarely fail to get a result for samples which can cause problems on tests, for example lipaemic and badly haemolysed samples.
Our highly skilled operators are able to get results from over 99.9% of samples we receive. This benefits the customer as it reduces the chance of having to take a repeat sample which can result in increased costs to the owner, delays in getting results and stress on the animal.
