SPOT Allergy Service
SPOT Allergy service

Complete Veterinary Care has teamed up with Spectrum Laboratories to bring a cost effective and comprehensive allergy service for your vet practice.

In-vitro testing has been available to veterinarians since 1985 with the introduction of the K-9 RAST (Radioallergosorbant Test) program. A number of year’s later ELISA (Enzyme Linked Immunosorbant Assay) technology became available. These are essentially similar tests, using radioisotopes and enzyme colour reactions respectively as their means of qualification.

Serum IgE testing and hyposensitisation can provide lasting relief from allergy and allergy-related symptoms that pets struggle with. Suppression therapy (steroids, antihistamines, Cyclosporine and such like) can become more expensive than treatment, especially if you factor in side effects and costs they can create with long-term use.

Serum allergy testing and subsequent treatment works to not only increase an animal’s tolerance to offending allergens, it also provides the convenience of a steroid-independent testing methodology. This allows you, the vet, to keep the animal comfortable during the diagnostic phase until such time as hyposensitisation treatment can begin.

One blood test does it all. More than 20 years of research and development has shown that, the more allergies tested for and then treated, the greater chance there is of success. A one off test consists of 91 UK specific allergen panels for canines and felines and a 80 panel for equines. We feel it is important to test for a full range of allergens in order to gain a more complete understanding of the animals’ immune system.

The panels includes:

  • TREES
  • WEEDS
  • FUNGI

Spectrum Labs use state of the art technology and treat the sample prior to testing to reduce false positives and background cross reactions. Serum based allergy testing is now widely accepted and since Spectrum were one of the first to offer an allergy screen they have over 20 years of experience and knowledge, thus making the SPOT screen one of the most advanced in the industry and at the leading edge of its technology.

Treatment Methodology

Spectrum Labs isn’t just known for it’s sensitive and specific testing assay but has also made a name for their comprehensive approach to treatment. Since there is no known “cure” for allergies and the prospect of avoiding all the things dog, cats and horses react to is unrealistic, we turn to hyposensitisation to help you, the vet, effectively manage a pet’s allergies. While other labs limit the number of allergens in their treatments, we increase the likelihood for quicker, more lasting relief by including up to 24 allergens in a single treatment set, often for a price that is a fraction of what other labs charge.

Administered in Increasing Doses

Treatment for allergies are via subcutaneous injections of the offending allergens. These shots are administered over a 8/9-month period and administered in increasing doses as well as gradual increases in concentration. The initial 3 vials are of an increasing concentration and is followed by monthly maintenance shots.  The treatment is available by veterinary prescription only.

CVC’s “Your Allergy Solution” packs provide your practice with everything you need including postage labels, blood submission forms, blood tubes, information on the testing and treatment processes. In addition, we follow each case from start to finish with a series of postcards which keeps you, the vet, updated each step of the way.
